Practices and Exercises to Cultivate Compassion

Don’t Believe Everything You Think

If a thought causes you stress, yet you can’t break the habit of thinking it again and again, you can consciously decide to question the thought, rather than believe it right off the bat. The same goes for those thoughts people think about you. You don’t have to believe them either. Instead of assuming that your thoughts are true, ask yourself these questions:

• Who would I be if I didn’t believe that thought?

• How would I live my life without the thought?

Ask, then give yourself a moment to really feel into the answer. You may notice that when you ask yourself these questions, you experience a moment of peace and spaciousness. This is because your mind stops for a moment when the thought process is interrupted. Instead of staying on the level of thought activity, your awareness drops into the same silence that you experience in meditation, the same silence that underlies all your thoughts, the same silence of your soul. The fact that you can question yourself and your thoughts means there is a thinker of the thoughts, and that is who and what you connect to in this inquiry practice. This week, identify your thoughts that don’t bring you happiness, and meet them with the questions above.
